बच्चे के मस्तिश्क के विकास की प्राकृतिक प्रक्रिया ही वास्तविक षिक्षा है। केवल पुस्तकों का अध्ययन कर जानकारियों का संग्रह वास्तविक षिक्षा नहीं है। पुस्तकें तो समाज के तथ्यों को इंगित करने की साधन मात्र है। जब हम किसी तथ्य को ठीक-ठीक सुनते हैं तो हमारा उसके बारे में ठीक-ठीक समझना होता है; यह विकास की प्राकृतिक प्रक्रिया का आधार है। अतः मानव मस्तिश्क के विकास की प्राकृतिक प्रक्रिया ही बच्चे के भीतर मौलिकता पैदा करती है।

Sahajivan – Sahaśikṣaṇ is a holistic approach to co-living and co-learning in order to foster a creative atmosphere where, through multi-generational supportive relationships among various age-groups, together we can explore the truth of reality.

As a center, Space for Nurturing Creativity is a model intentional community cum alternative residential learning center, fulfilling the roles of both school and family, providing both the fostering which parents would naturally offer, as well as the education which teachers would support. It is Space for Nurturing Creativity’s mission to provide a holistically nurturing environment for children, youth and young adults to develop not only curiosity driven exploration towards both independent and co-learning and creativity, but also to foster their own mental well being and abilities to live harmoniously and self-sustainably in communal settings of large collective families, ultimately empowering them towards cultivating positive relationships that expand beyond their immediate household, not only with one’s neighbours and greater society, but also with their surrounding natural environment.

Living together allows our relationships to transcend the usual boundaries of teacher and student. Here at S.N.C. children are not separated into different grade levels (KG, 1st, 2nd, etc.), nor do we categorize ourselves as students or teachers according to age; collectively we are “co-learners”. Thus we can eliminate the concept of inadequate student-teacher ratios, which occur as a one to many mode of communication within a lecture setting, by replacing the pyramid hierarchy model of classroom management of the authority figure at the front of a group of obedient students sitting in orderly rows, with a more interconnected cyclical model, as a many to many mode of communication, fostering a new sense of peer education through cross-generational open dialog, children, youth and adults together, discussing, exploring and discovering (ie. learning) side by side and from one another. An adult can learn just as much from a child as the child might learn from the adult. The learning and teaching happens simultaneously in multiple directions across the circle. Through dialog we travel together on this journey of curiosity, exploration and discovery.

This interconnected cyclical structure is also a model for our organizational structure where each co-living, co-learning resident at Space for Nurturing Creativity takes their own initiative to participate in day-to-day activities, as well as to take on various responsibilities according to their individual expertise or interests to learn. Just as household and organizational management responsibilities are not delegated, is it not a requirement to attend classes, participate in activities or complete assignments, and so by eliminating the pressure of “having to do so” and creating an encouraging and inspiring atmosphere, one becomes naturally inclined to do so.

Collectively our residential co-learners mostly come from rural villages throughout the Garhwal and Kumaon regions of Uttarakhand: the younger batch whose parents have sought out an alternative collaborative living and holistic educational opportunity for their children, the older of the batch bringing with them a variety of experiences gained while living, studying and working in other regions. We all agree learning has no limit and thus does not end with a printed certificate in hand.

Using our own residential school experiment as an evolving model and through our School Partnership Programs, we are contributing towards the evolution of new holistically collaborative, peaceful and harmonious society.
